Triethylaluminium for the domestic market

Tomskneftekhim ramped up its triethylaluminium capacities by 35%.


A compressor equipment upgrade completed at SIBUR’s Tomsk site has increased its triethylaluminium capacities from 170 to 230 tpa. NIOST employees were involved in the project, with total investments exceeding RUB 15 m.

The triethylaluminium production requirements are tough, and globally, only a limited number of companies make this high-margin product.

Triethylaluminium is a co-catalyst used to make polypropylene, linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE). While most petrochemical companies in Russia have to source it from abroad, Tomskneftekhim is the only domestic company producing it for its own needs as well as supplying it to external customers.

SIBUR Tobolsk, NPP Neftekhimiya (a JV between SIBUR and Gazprom Neft in Moscow) and Polyom (a polypropylene JV between SIBUR and Gazprom Neft in Omsk) all rely on this feedstock.

The increased capacities will help satisfy a growing market demand while also meeting the needs of SIBUR’s polymer facilities and, to a certain extent, of other Russian producers.

Tomskneftekhim is the only domestic company producing triethylaluminium for its own needs as well as supplying it to external customers.

“Coupled with a sophisticated refining method, our production process ensures high aluminium content (up to 99.6%) in triethylaluminium, which has the effect of minimising its consumption as a co-catalyst during polymerisation and obviously improves the quality of end products,” said Vladimir Pleshkov, Head of Production at Tomskneftekhim. “The production requirements are tough, and globally, only a limited number of companies make this high-margin product.”
